Last-minute Halloween costume ideas: Here’s a tool that can help with ideas

Barbie is ruling Halloween, coming in as the holiday’s top costume choice.

That’s what Frightgeist, a site operated by Google, discovered as it tracked search trends to determine the most popular costumes. After Barbie, the top choices were princess, Spider Man, witch and fairy. This year makes the first time in three years that witch hasn’t landed at number one.

But what if you don’t want to wear something that you’re likely to see everywhere? Frightgeist has a tool that can help you with that, too. If you go to the site, and click on the costume wizard button, you will be directed to a tool that will help you find ideas for a unique costume.

First, you pick your spookiness level with zero being something like Marilyn Monroe, the idea it provided with “spookiness” at its lowest level to voodoo doctor at the highest level. Once you’ve picked the spookiness level, you choose how unique you want your costume to be. Leaving the spookiness level at the mid-level, the most common idea was Wednesday Addams compared to the most-unique suggestion of a raven.

The tool also breaks down searches to filter for classic or modern ideas as well as trends nationally or locally.  For example, a modern idea would be Disney’s “Coco” compared to a classic idea of belly dancer.

It’s worth playing around with the site to see if you can come up with some unusual ideas. Happy hunting – and haunting!
